How I Can Help
If you are experiencing or recognise any of the issues listed below, click on the tab to find out more about how the benefits of hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, counselling and cognitive therapies could help, or simply contact me for more information.
The environmental and social demands of today’s high stress lifestyles can affect ability to cope, whether it is a specific cause of stress, or the effect of cumulative stress acting over time, when demands outweigh perceived abilities, problems can arise.
I can work with you to manage stress in a variety of ways, providing useful tools to help you control its negative effects, which can include training in relaxation and self-hypnosis. Effective relaxation brings the added benefits of a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure and increased energy levels.
Anxiety can take many forms, from panic attacks – which can strike seemingly at random, (even during sleep) with unpleasant and frightening symptoms, to generalised anxiety disorder.
Unpleasant physical symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeat, trembling, nausea or dizziness and a feeling of unreality. Anxiety disorders can affect thought, behaviour and emotional state.
Hypno-Psychotherapy is an effective treatment in anxiety cases either on its own or as part of a combined treatment programme.
‘Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower it turns out, counts for very little.’ New Scientist vol. 136, issue 1845.
A meta-analysis conducted internationally and involving 72,000 participants established hypnosis as three times more effective than nicotine replacements, and fifteen times more effective than unassisted efforts to quit smoking.
Smoking is an issue for many clients and the desire to quit smoking can be triggered by many factors, treatment is as individual as the smoker, and may take the form of hypnotherapy in isolation or if required, as part of a wider approach, in a single or multi-session format.
I also work with clients with wider addiction and dependency issues and am happy to discuss situations further on an individual basis. Dependency is a very individual issue, looking at biological, social and psychological influences with the help of a qualified therapist can help to overcome unwanted behaviour patterns.
Depression, like anxiety, is a relatively common issue in today’s society, and can generate feelings such as a sense of inadequacy, despondency, a decrease in activity or reactivity, pessimism, sadness, or a gap between what ‘I am’, and what ‘I should be’.
Therapy for depression is focused on individual and social considerations, and can draw from various psychodynamic, counselling, or cognitive behavioural approaches, either as a stand-alone treatment or alongside current medication.
Please feel free to telephone to discuss your individual circumstances.
Obesity and eating disorders can cause serious health and social problems. Sometimes emotional issues and subconscious conflict can lie at the root of inappropriate eating.
Hypno-Psychotherapy can assist in weight management and control, issues involving comfort eating, as well as problems involving IBS, indigestion and bloating.
Unhealthy behaviours contributing to weight gain can be addressed, and insight gained into the underlying reasons for eating patterns. I am happy to work with clients in a personally tailored course of therapy based upon individual requirements, and in relation to food issues or weight control.
These issues can be varied, and may include the following;
Excessive worrying
Issues relating to lack of confidence, self-esteem or difficulties with self-acceptance
Social or personal inhibition and shyness, from blushing to social phobia
Problems relating to anger, guilt or shame
Unsatisfactory patterns in relationships arising out of issues such as jealousy and trust
Obsessive thinking or rumination, intrusive recurring ideas, thoughts or impulses
Compulsive urges, behaviours or rituals used to dispel the anxiety of obsessive thinking
Anxious or negative self-talk
Perfectionism
Withheld feelings
Mistaken beliefs
Lack of meaning or self-purpose.
Problems with expressing feelings
Problem memories
Shocks
Whether it be help with any of the specific issues mentioned above, or in the managing of personal crises or challenges such as bereavement, divorce, illness, or changes at work or in financial circumstances, the positive effects of addressing emotional or thought issues can also improve assertiveness and self-nurturing skills.
Difficulty getting to sleep, difficulty switching off, early morning waking, poor quality sleep, or the anxiety brought on by the inability to sleep can be caused by psychological factors.
With appropriate Hypno-Psychotherapy, sleep can be easier, healthier and uninterrupted.
Like phobias, habit disorders such as nail biting, hair pulling or snacking, can become debilitating and significantly affect quality of life. Sometimes they can go unnoticed; sometimes they can be painful or even dangerous.
Often rooted at a subconscious level, habit disorders can be outside awareness; Hypno-Psychotherapy can provide the solution to breaking the cycle.
Fear can be debilitating and common phobias include heights, water, social phobia or fear of public speaking, fear of flying, dentistry, blood or illness, insects, small animals, claustrophobia and agoraphobia.
Left untreated, phobias can lead to avoidance or safety behaviours, and significantly impair quality of life in the individual.
All phobias can be treated, no matter how common or unusual they may be, please telephone to discuss on an individual basis.
I am able to work with clients in goal achievement and performance enhancement, whether in sport or personal exercise, improving focus in work, hobbies or study.
Whilst on-going significant improvements in results can be achieved, therapy focused towards specific events such as exams or driving tests is also available.
Personal development techniques can assist with poor memory or concentration, in addition to boosting creativity and motivation where inactivity or procrastination leads to being easily distracted.
These areas of psychotherapy lend themselves very well to the use of hypnosis, and many clients find this particularly empowering.
The following issues can be addressed with the proper application of Hypno-Psychotherapeutic techniques;
- Control of pain, and pain reduction
- Tinnitus
- Skin disorders including psoriasis
- Migraines
- Headaches
- Dentistry procedures
If you find it difficult to relax, then a personally tailored course of sessions can provide the skills necessary to reach a state of deep relaxation. This can be enhanced by the teaching of self-hypnosis techniques which can provide clients with the ability to manage stressful times or events, or just improve the quality of life generally.
I often use the teaching of self-hypnosis to reinforce gains and improvements made by clients in therapy, whatever the specific reason for that therapy.
Often, personalised recordings in disc or MP3 format will be provided as part of the therapy itself. The cost of such recordings is agreed at the normal hourly rate, on an individual basis and subject to requirement.
This is not a complete list, but it does show some of those more common issues. Below are more of the difficulties that can be helped by therapy. All of these can be discussed on an individual basis. As ever, please feel free to email me or telephone to do so.
